GAIL: The Corporation That Runs The LPG Pipelines That Provides Fuel To India
Gas Authority of India Limited, commonly
referred to as GAIL, is India’s largest state-run and owned natural gas
processing and disbursement cooperation with its headquarters in national
capital of New Delhi. The company has the business operations in the domain of
liquefied petroleum gas transmission, natural gas (mostly methane) and liquid
hydrocarbon processing and distribution, petroleum byproducts like
petrochemical production, urban gas distribution, exploration of novel sites
coupled with production, as well as electricity generation. GAIL is recognized
as a prestigious Maharatna company by the Government of India since 2013. It is
among only eight other PSE (Public Sector Enterprise) corporations that has
received this esteemed recognition. Over the preceding years GAIL has
demonstrated immense growth in the field of gas transmission by constructing a
massive network of trunk pipelines covering a distance of around 10,700
kilometers across the country. Currently GAIL owns the largest pipeline network
in the country. One of the flagship LPG pipelines of India is the enormous cross-country 2300 km
Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur pipeline which has the operational capacity to
handle 33.4 MMSCMD of gas. Additionally the company owns and operates more than
2000 km of LPG pipelines in India and holds the unique and esteemed position of operating one of the
world's longest exclusive LPG pipeline. The pipeline extends from Jamnagar in the
state of Gujarat to Loni in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. So far, the corporation
has set up a total of eight major LPG processing plants, four of which are
along the iconic Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur pipeline, two of these plants are
in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, one at Vaghodia in the state of Gujarat and the
other is at Auraiya, Uttar Pradesh. Furthermore, there are additional
processing plants in the state of Assam and Maharashtra. The one in Assam is in
Lakwa and the one in the state of Maharashtra is situated in Usar. Collectively
these plants have the capacity to produce nearly 1 million tpa of LPG. The LPG produced and processed in these
plants is then distributed largely through to pipelines that cover twenty two
states across the country. GAIL runs a complex LPG distribution network through
pipelines that ensures the availability of the largest consumed source of
domestic fossil fuel in the country.
Additionally LPG is used in large scale electricity generation providing
electric power to a nation of 1.3 billion people. LPG pipelines provide fuel that drives the nation’s economy into
the twenty first century.
